Where Do They Get The Stuff That Essential Oils Are Made From?

Origin Of Essential Oils

Natural essential oils come from plants all over the world, but mainly from warmer climates, because most of them need a lot of sun and heat to be able to produce the things that essential oils are extracted from.

They are formed in the oleaginous vesicles and they accumulate in diverse parts and organs of the plants: flowers, leaves, and seeds, skin of the fruits, roots, barks, marrow or woody stems.

Some plants only need some heat to give its aroma, while in other parts it can be necessary to cut them, to press them or even to crush them.

You Want Organic

If essential oils of plants are extracted that have been cultivated in a conventional way they can contain remnants of fertilizers or pesticides that act as pollutants and can give allergic reactions or cause allergies.

Therefore, it is important to always use oils of plants that are guaranteed biologically natural cultivations, that is to say organic, or a plant that has been cared for with natural means.

Where do essential oils come from?

Most people understand that you don’t get a high quality Natural product if the source product has been grown with synthetic (chemical) fertilizer products or that have at some point synthetic things have been added to them in any phase of their growth.

The best and most appreciated essential oils are those coming from wild plants.

The form of obtaining the essential oil of a plant depends on the part of the plant you are using to extract the oil. The most common method is the distillation with vapor, in a still; it makes the plants liberate their essences in boiling water or in the vapor of water.

How Is Essential Oil Made? Where Does It Come From?

The obtaining of essential oils – and their characteristics

The essential oil ascends with the vapor and when it cools down in the still, the oil and the water separate.

The essential oil is usually lighter than water and because it floats on top it can be easily extracted.  The water, called ‘essential water’ (or Hydrosols), has some similar properties to those of the oil.

To obtain the concentrated essences the extraction method is usually used: the flowers are placed in a recipient which becomes a moving solvent that draws out all their aromas, colors, and wax.

This solvent is distilled continuously until obtaining a semi-solid substance that will be dissolved in alcohol and distilled again to obtain an essential oil of great quality that receives the final classification of “pure.”

Cold Pressed

The cold pressed (or expressed) is a method that is used for the obtaining of essential oils of the skin of a fruit by means of pressure, like in the case of the oils from citric.

When squeezing the skin (the pulp and the other fibers will have been extracted previously) you obtain an essential oil emulsion and watery liquid that will then be centrifuged and filtered. The citric essential oils are usually also called “essences.”

The oils “essentials” don’t resemble in anyway the fatty oils that we all know (as the olive oil, for example), because they evaporate completely without leaving a trace.

If you pour some essential oil drops on a paper a humid stain won’t take long to disappear, while the fatty oils always leave a greasy stain.

Essential oils characteristics

It can also happen that an essential oil leaves a stain with some tonality, because many of them are yellow, orange, brown or green in color.

Their consistency can go from being very liquid (lavender) to that of a syrup (siam benzoin).

The essential oils are not water-soluble, but they dissolve well in fatty oils, in cream, in whole milk, in honey and in alcohol.  Their scent and their flavour are very intense and it is not a wonder; because to obtain a drop of rose oil it is necessary to use thirty flowers.

Some oils, as that of jara, are so dense that they do not even smell good and it is necessary to dilute them so that they are pleasant to the smell.

Essential Oil’s Ingredients

Essential Oils Need Proper Proportions

The interaction of all these components shows us the most important effect in the essential oils: their balanced reaction.

This is how we explain something that may at first sight seem to be contradictory, that is to say that lavender oil, the same as some other essential oils, can act at the same time as a stimulant and as a relaxant.

What happens is that it helps to find a balance adding something that is lacking and removing where it has too much, both at a somatic and psychological level.

The proportions of the ingredients of an essential oil can vary a little in function of their origin, cultivation type, climate, time of the gathering of the plants and method of the obtaining; but they are generally small fluctuations although can sometimes influence in the properties of the oil.

Some ingredients, as the ketones and the phenols, have quite bad fame because of the secondary effects that are talked about, but the essential oils that contain them possess some magnificent healing properties if they are used in the correct doses. In which case, less is best!

The oils with a high ketones percentage, as that of mint (15-30%), or with great quantity of phenols, as that of thyme (up to 55%), should be used in small doses and never during a long period of time.

Important: the plant species

This is only valid if it is the same species and plant variety. On the contrary, the different lavender varieties also have their ingredients in different proportions and their effect is also different. Therefore it is very important that in each essential oil the scientific name of the plant is specified of the one where it originates, as well as its specific variety.

In some plants, the proportions of their components can vary notably in function of the area where it is grown. In these essential oils it is spoken of Chemotype (CT) and this main ingredient is included on its scientific behalf, in this thyme it would be Thymus vulgaris, CT thymol (red thyme).

Aromatherapy’s Effects

To feel well, being in a good mood, living in a balanced point between tension and relaxation, this is a goal that most people consider completely unreachable in their daily lives.

Why not do something good for yourself, to really relax the mind and to be given a time to rest and take it easy?

This would be also the best form of taking care of your health, because it is known that the spiritual well-being reinforces the immune system. But with the stress caused by our multiple daily obligations we don’t take the necessary time to recover or we don’t take advantage of our time correctly.

If we feel physical or mental symptoms we limit ourselves to take pills that cover up the symptoms and help us “get back into motion” as soon as possible. We totally pass up the relationship that can exist between the physical uneasiness and the mental one.

Let us see a very average example: A state of being in a bad mood, maybe caused by some difficulties at work, end up causing headaches and stomach acidity.

And the pains and physical uneasiness don’t in fact help to get us in a good mood, neither do they stimulate concentration or creativity … and it is believed that this is the way a vicious cycle is formed and that the only way out should not be going to look for it in analgesics like aspirin neither in other medications.

If something is wrong in our minds or in our spirits and we determine not to pay attention to their warnings, our body will continue paying the consequences. With the essential oils we can obtain a general well-being that helps us to alleviate the physical symptoms easily.

To put a couple of drops of oil in a vaporizer is just as easy as to take a pill, to connect the television or to open a bottle … but the effect is radically different.
